A Tribute To My Pastor

I want to pass along a few words about my pastor, Dr. Bobby Roberson, on this Pastor Appreciation Day! I hardly know where to begin…

As long as I can remember going to church, there has been “Brother Bobby“, as we call him. Growing up in the community around Gospel Light Baptist Church of Walkertown, North Carolina, I have seen the effectiveness of his ministry. Not many people ask, “Who is Brother Bobby?” around Walkertown! For over 54 years, Gospel Light has had the privilege of having this dear soldier of the cross as their pastor.

Though there are many things I would like to say, I will only mention a few. Three words come to mind as I think of my pastor:

#1 – Humble

Few people can handle the accolades of their peers while not letting it go to their heads! Without one reservation, Brother Bobby is one of the few. He is always giving credit to Jesus for everything good and taking credit for what goes wrong.

#2 – Gracious

Through the years, Brother Bobby has faced many trials in the ministry. He readily admits mistakes and falters he has made and allows other to to the same. When those around him or members of the congregation make mistakes, he is longsuffering and very gracious when he needs to be. He is always ready to listen to what you have to say.

#3 – Unchanging

Brother Bobby has not changed, one iota, on doctrine! He does not stick his finger to the wind to figure out what to preach. He faithfully preaches what God tells him to preach. I have never known my pastor to preach anything contrary to the Scriptures!

Conclusion:

Though I have not been what I ought to have been through the years, I have the greatest pastor on earth. Many a day have I sat down and contemplated the privilege to grow up under a ministry like Gospel Light. Praise God for a pastor like Brother Bobby!

5433762: The View from Mount Calvary: 24 Portraits of the Cross Throughout Scripture The View from Mount Calvary: 24 Portraits of the Cross Throughout Scripture

By John Phillips / Kregel Publications

Without Jesus, the Bible makes no sense. And without his atoning death on the cross, the Bible makes no difference. In The View from Mount Calvary, renowned Bible commentator John Phillips surveys the entire Bible and shows how its many sections, books, and subjects all revolve around the death of Jesus on Mt. Calvary. Recommended reading especially during the Easter season, The View from Mount Calvary will deepen readers’ appreciation of the finished work of Christ.

Expect Great Things From God; Attempt Great Things For God

The title and text of this message was borrowed from a sermon preached by William Carey on May 30, 1792. A result of this message was that when preached it was preached to an association at Nottingham, England,  the men later started the English Baptist Missionary Society on October 2, 1792. Later Carey became known as the father of modern missions. Below is an outline that was developed after contemplating the passage in question.

Title: “Expect Great Things From God; Attempt Great Things For God!”

Text: Isaiah 44:2-3

(Isaiah 44:2-3) “Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:”  (KJV)

Introduction:

•    In our text we find that God is reminding Israel through Isaiah that God is going to restore them as a nation!
•    The Millennial Reign of Christ is in view here!
•    Tucked away in this prophesy is a promise you and I can count on!
•    Verse two teaches that we have help, and verse three teaches us that we will be able to serve the Lord through the ministry of the Holy Ghost!
•    I want us to see from this message that we have a unique relationship with God, we that are saved, and that we should move forward for His glory!

Proposition: There are two simple axioms that I want us to start living by as a church found in our text.

I.    We Should Expect Great Things From God!

(Isaiah 44:2) “Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.”  (KJV)

A.    Everything God gets involved in is great!

B.    Nothing He does is mediocre!

C.    What great things can we expect? Whatever we need!
     a.    Opportunity to serve Him
     b.    Ample supply for our needs
     c.    His presence
     d.    His bounty in our arena of service
     e.    Souls to be saved
     f.    Missions to be started
     g.    Communities to be reached with the Gosepl!

D.    If He made us, formed us, helps us, chosen us, then why not expect great things from God

E.    He knows all about everything, and we need to just find out which way He is going and follow Him!

F.    Do you expect God to use the mission program here? Do you expect Him to exponentially multiply your mission dollars and support missions? Do you expect Him to use you?

II.    We Should Attempt Great Things For God!

(Isaiah 44:3) “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:”  (KJV)

A.    We should attempt great things because we have a great God to serve, and anything we do for Him is great!

B.    God proportions the work to the means! I.e. Water to thirsty, & water on Dry Ground

(Deuteronomy 33:25) “Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.”  (KJV)

C.    God has empowered us through His Spirit! – This should behoove us to move forward!

(Zechariah 4:6) “Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”  (KJV)

D.    God has backed his will and commands up with His omnipotence!

E.    Attempt what great things:

     i.    Building a church
     ii.    Building a family
     iii.    Winning souls to Christ
     iv.    Being a missionary
     v.    Being faithful in the so-called mundane tasks for God’s glory!

F.    Is this church attempting great things for God in the arena of missions? Nothing will liven up and charge the church more than souls being saved and missions being carried out and supported!

Conclusion:

To The Sinner:

•    Repent and believe the gospel

To The Christian:

•    Expect Great things from God! – He will use you!!!!
•    Attempt great things for God! – Will you make yourself available????

JOSHUA LEFT NOTHING UNDONE

Scripture Reading: Joshua 11:9-15, Matthew 23:23

Text: Joshua 11:15 “As the Lord commanded Moses His servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.”

I have so many things I want to do in my life. There are many books I would like to read and many places I would like to go. But life is very short and I can see that I am not going to get done all I want to do. However, that should not be my major concern. My major concern must not be to do all I want to do, but not to leave undone what I am supposed to do! Joshua “left nothing undone” of all He was commanded. Jesus told the meticulous Pharisees, “these ought ye to have done and not to leave the other undone.” He was speaking of their rotten attitudes and dispositions and said they had left out of their duties “judgment, mercy, and faith,” these are necessary things, but He added, they must not leave “undone” the other important matters of the law.

The quality that makes a great Christian is not so much what you do, but what you leave undone. You may do ten thousand things today, but what will you leave undone? If you go to work, get all your work done, speak kindly to people, come home and work in your yard and fix up your house and read the newspaper, you have done a lot; but you have left undone your time with God, your meditation on the Word, your soulwinning duties. If on Sunday morning you awake and spend three or four hours painting your house you have gotten much done, but you have left undone what God commanded which is to “not forsake the assembling of yourselves together” at the Lord’s house. If you treat people nicely this week, love and do for the needy, care for your family and friends, give to several some good things; but if you leave undone and unpaid your tithes, you are not a good Christian! Joshua is commended in our text not because of what he did but because he “left nothing undone of all that Moses commanded him!” The first things on our agenda must be to do what God says in His Word! If we have time for a game of tennis or golf, fine. If I have time to go sightseeing and take a vacation, fine.

People say to me sometimes, “Why don’t we do this or that at our church, have this activity or that?” None of those things may be wrong, but if you don’t go soulwinning and you can find time for many other matters, you are a disobedient Christian. It has been my experience that people will make time to do the big things in their life. If golf or softball or fishing is a big thing,  they will make time to do it, even at the expense of church services or Bible study or soulwinning. Therefore, the big things in our life should be personal Bible study, the services at our church, and soulwinning times. If the little things, the not so important things, like softball, golf, fishing, tennis, yard work, etc. can be done without “leaving the other undone” then have at it!

If you and I desire to be good Christians like Joshua, we must not only examine what all we do, we must examine what we leave undone.

Questions to Ponder

1. List four or five things you believe the Bible commands you to do each week that you should never leave undone.

2. What excuses do you use to miss church or soulwinning? We make excuses to do what we really want to do!
