Get Back Into The Closet

Many years ago, I heard of a poll that was taken from numerous pastors. It asked the following question, “What was the most important thing in ministry?” Not at all surprising, the overwhelming answer was that of PRAYER. However, when asked about how much time was given to prayer in relation to everything else, the amount of time spent praying was at the bottom of the list. What a sad commentary! If the people who know with certainty of the importance of prayer are not spending adequate time facilitating the prayer closet, then how much worse it must be for the average church member!  The following sermon outline addresses this issue.

Title: “Get Back Into The Closet!”

Text: Matthew 6:5-6

(Matthew 6:5-6) “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”  (KJV)

Introduction:

•    We need to get back to secret praying!
•    A good way to measure our praying is how much time we spend in the closet praying!
•    Consider what Leonard Ravehill stated in his book Why Revival Tarries:

“Poverty-stricken as the Church is today in many things, she is most stricken here, in the place of prayer. We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.”

Proposition: There are five things I want to draw our attention to in this passage of Scripture concerning prayer!

I.    We Should Pray!

“ But thou, when thou prayest…”

A.    Jesus prefaces His statement about prayer with an assumption that people will pray!

B.    All children of God should pray!

II.    We Should Have A Place!

“…enter into thy closet…”

A.    We should frequent our place of prayer “physically”!

B.    I feel that having a certain place to pray helps me! – Jesus went to the Garden often!

C.    We should frequent our place “figuratively”! – We can take our position with Christ at the throne of God in holy intercession for our brethren!

III.    We Should Shut Ourselves In!

“…when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret…”

A.    When we get down to business we need to do what we can to keep distractions from coming about!

B.    Jesus means for us to focus our attention on prayer and worship!

C.    This door is also referring to the fact that we should get alone and not always do our praying in front of others!

IV.    We Should Remember God Rewards Our Prayer Efforts!

“…thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

A.    Jesus promises that The Father WILL see us praying!

B.    Jesus said that God the Father would reward our secret praying!

C.    Jesus gives us some strong consolation to the fact that God will give us answers that others will see even though they may not have known of our praying beforehand!

Conclusion:

To The Sinner:

•    Repent and be saved!

To The Christian:

•    Get back into the closet!

29056: Why Revival Tarries Why Revival Tarries

By Leonard Ravenhill / Bethany House

Leonard Ravenhill’s call to revival is as timely now as it was when first published over forty years ago. The message is fearless and often radical as he expounds on the disparity between the New Testament church and the church today. This book contains the heart of his message, A.W. Tozer called Ravenhill “a man sent from God” who “appeared at (a) critical moment in history,” just as the Old Testament prophets did. Included are questions for group and individual study.

Pastor, Have You Heard About Lamar Whittemore

In late September, of 2006, myself and two other men were holding a tent revival in Williston, North Dakota. During the meeting, I brought up the fact that Watertown, South Dakota needed a solid Independent Baptist Church. We began to pray and make plans to hold a series of meetings later on the next year. Lamar Whittemore’s name was brought up in the conversation as I recall. (I still am uncovering the details of how God has put this together, but God does work in mysterious ways, doesn’t He?) The meeting was held as scheduled. Lamar preached in the meeting and later was able to move up to Watertown! TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

Bio:

Brother Lamar, and his wife Chastity are a tremendous blessing to be around. Lamar is the pastor of Harvest Baptist Church in Watertown, SD. They are sent from Eastside Baptist Church of Greeneville, TN and are serving with Anchor Baptist Missions International.

In His Own Words…
“My name is Lamar Whittemore, and my wife is Chastity.  I was reared under some of the greatest and godliest parents anyone could ever have.  The Lord saved me at the age of six, and answered the call to preach at the age of fourteen.  My wife was reared by a godly Mom, and sat under some great preaching as a member of Roanoke Baptist Church in Liberty, South Carolina.  She was saved at the age of fourteen.  God brought us together, and we were married in July of 1995.  I was privileged to work on the mission field between high school and college.  I attended college at Tabernacle Baptist College in Greenville, South Carolina; and graduated from there in 1996.  After college I was the youth director at Tabernacle and worked on the radio.
The Lord opened the door for me to pastor United Baptist Church in Greeneville, TN in December of 1999.  While pastoring, I was greatly blessed to continue my education, and graduate from Crown College in Powell, TN in 2006.  We resigned the pastorate in September of 2006.  In a way that only God could, He miraculously had someone mention South Dakota to me the very night I resigned United Baptist Church.  I honestly had no intentions to pray about the need in South Dakota.  But, the Holy Spirit would wake me up in the middle of the night praying for Watertown, South Dakota.  After receiving advice to take a survey trip, we realized Watertown was where God wanted us.  We did deputation for a year and a half, and moved to Watertown in May of 2008.  We began having church in a couple’s home the weekend we came to town.  After seven months in their home, we started meeting at the Watertown Event Center on January 4th, 2009.  Throughout these two years God has shown Himself mighty and true!  It’s hard to believe that we will be starting to have services in a church building January 2nd, 2011.  To God Be The Glory!!!
God is definitely working here in Watertown.  We are running between thirty-five and fourty in church.  We also have a children’s ministry on Thursday nights.  Our high number has been forty-three children.  We are praying God continues to work miracles, touch hearts, save souls, put homes back together, and bring glory to Himself.  With our moving into a building, there are many needs.  We need more songbooks, a church sign, tables and chairs to put in Sunday School Classrooms, sound system, etc.  But, more than anything, we need laborers for the field.  Please pray God will help us reach Watertown, the Great Plains States, and the World for His glory!  I honestly believe God can reach the world from Watertown!!!”
Lamar’s Burden… There are approximately twenty-five thousand people in Watertown with forty-eight thousand people in Codington County.  Our prayer is that God would send laborers to work here, and they can go out into smaller towns to reach them with the Gospel.

Conclusion:

I fully endorse Lamar and Chastity Whittemore. He has been a good friend and I know that he loves the Lord! Pastors, I ask two things from you regarding Brother Whittemore. First, please give him a call or email him to let him know that you read this post about him. Encourage this brother… pray with Him! Secondly, ask the Lord to provide him with more monetary support for his endeavors! I am sure he would be grateful for any prayers and financial support that YOUcould offer him.

Enduring The Unendurable!

This sermon outline encourages us as followers of Jesus Christ to continue on in spite of our obstacles. God gave this message to me on one of the hardest days of my ministry! Meditate upon this message and see if it doesn’t help you too!

Title: “Enduring The Unendurable!”

Text: II Corinthians 4:16-18

(2 Corinthians 4:16-18) “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”  (KJV)

Introduction:

•    In life we all have a cross to bear.

(Galatians 6:5) “For every man shall bear his own burden.”  (KJV)

•    Paul describes his circumstances in the previous verses!

(2 Corinthians 4:8-12) “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you.”  (KJV)

•    Many do not continue in God’s Will for their life because of their cross.
•    This cross is a sign of discipleship. We must endeavor to carry this cross even though it seems that it is unbearable!
•    Set backs, disappointments and misunderstandings all make things look different than what they really are! They are often like the funny mirrors at the fair!
•    Paul mentions some things here in our verses that should help us tonight!

Proposition: There are three things that suffering can produce in our lives if we derive our strength in God and His Word!

I.    When Crosses Get Too Heavy, Remember That God Proportions Your Shoulders To The Size Of The Cross You Have!

(2 Corinthians 4:16) “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”  (KJV)

A.    Funny thing about crosses, they are big and awkward. Never suitable… any way you carry them they hurt. It takes much discipline and purpose to carry them any distance.

B.    But is not that what God has called us to do!

C.    He never expects us to carry our cross any where without Him carrying one side!

D.    Crosses tend to show the onlookers, your inability to function, or they will embarrass you!

E.    The masses seem like they care very little about your cross, but there are a few of your brothers and sisters in the Lord that are concerned!

II.    When Crosses Leave Their Marks On You, Remember That They Produce Rewards!

(2 Corinthians 4:17) “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;”  (KJV)

A.    The awkward, heavy, detestable, and hurtful cross that Jesus bore, produced the reward of Salvation!

B.    Think about it, the only way for you to have your sins forgiven and a home in Heaven was for Jesus to endure the cross!

C.    There are people who God will use you to reach, but you will have to carry your cross to produce the fruit!

D.    When the cross digs in and leaves its marks, then you dig in deeper and let God make you His instrument!

III.    When Crosses Seem To Be The Only Thing You See, Look To Finish Line!

(2 Corinthians 4:18) “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”  (KJV)

A.    Many times we get so focused on making it one more step that we forget that there is a finish line!

B.    Many times we cannot enjoy the smell of roses, the warmth of the sunlight, and the aroma of daily nutrition for the cross that we are carrying!

C.    We are focused on the temporal rather than the eternal!

D.    We should make it our practice to see the finish line by faith!

Conclusion:

To The Sinner:

•    Repent and believe the gospel!

To The Christian:

•    All of us face hard and barren times, but God can cause the floods to fall on dry ground!
•    The God shape you as clay on His wheel!
