Why Some Pastors Are Out Of The Ministry

Occasionally, I will meet somebody who used to be a pastor, evangelist or missionary. The key phrase is, “USED TO BE”! Recognizing the fact that anybody who serves God can end up OUT of God’s will and ministry, we should take great care not to end up a casualty. We should do our best not to forsake the path and quit on God. After all, Jesus did not quit when carrying His cross!

The following 9 points(*) are from veteran missionary Robert Smith. He has worked in the country of Brazil for over 29 years with Macedonia World Baptist Missions. These thoughts are from a lesson he uses when teaching on the subject, “Why Missionaries Quit”. Whether you are a missionary or not, you can apply Dr. Smith’s thoughts to your situation! I hope this post will not only help missionaries, but many pastors and evangelists!

  1. BURN OUT* – over extending yourself to the point of exhaustion and spiritual emptiness. RPM = Recklessly Pursuing Ministries
  2. BLOW OUT* – one major incident or experience that causes you to leave the field. Ex. robbery, death, assault, terrorism, etc.
  3. STRESSED OUT* – drained emotionally through pressure points; competing with other missionaries (pastors, evangelists).
  4. FLAME OUT* – out of ideas; out of lessons; out of messages…
  5. SHOCKED OUT* – letting differences affect you: culture shock; missionary shock…
  6. SCARED OUT* – fear accompanied by little or no faith. Don’t be afraid of fear, but there is a problem when you have fear with no faith.
  7. FAKED OUT* – leaving, thinking it was the will of God.
  8. THROWN OUT* – leaving the country by being kicked out by the government.
  9. PULLED OUT* – being brought out of the country at the request of your pastor or by the mission board. (immorality, immodesty, etc.)

Though good, solid and qualified men have started out well, many do not finish well. May each of us who claim God’s calling endeavor to be like the Apostle Paul… “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:”. Please share this post with your preacher friends!

88605: Abide in Christ Abide in Christ

By Andrew Murray / Whitaker House Publishers

Instead of accepting the invitation to enter God’s throne room, many Christians stand alone outside the door, uncertain and ashamed. Christ beckons them to His banqueting table and offers them a room in His house, but they foolishly give up the glory of the life He has offered. They come to Jesus as Redeemer but never go beyond the doorway to abide in Him and experience the unspeakable joy of dwelling with the King of Kings. Andrew Murray knew what it meant to be continually in the Father’s presence. Read these thirty-one heart-searching readings and learn how to live daily in closer communion and fellowship with Him. Accept God’s invitation and live in His blessing and glory instead of shuffling your feet at the gate.

Pastor, Have You Heard About Transporters For Jesus…

For many years now, I have heard about a ministry carried out by Brother Arnold Worley, and his wife, Wanda. They live in Marion, North Carolina and are members of Temple Baptist Church where Gerald Stines is the fine pastor. This ministry, of course, is Transporters For Jesus!

Who Are The Worley’s?

Brother Arnold and Sister Wanda will have been married for 40 years this coming February 2011. They have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. Arnold was saved on October 31, 1970 and Wanda has been saved for 50 years! To God be the glory!

What Is Transporters For Jesus?

This ministry was birthed into the heart of Brother Arnold in 1996 while taking a load of lumber to a missionary in Mexico. Understanding the need to help God’s servants carry out their calling by doing practical things like moving supplies, etc., Transporters For Jesus was born.

James 2:15-16 states, “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?”

To Brother Worley, it is all about helping the missionary or pastor get what they need to the field. They just want to help people of like faith to carry out the work of God. Whether it is moving someone to a new pastorate, or bringing a missionary’s belongings to a sea port to load onto a container for shipping to a remote part of the world, Transporters For Jesus is there!

How Are The Worley’s Supported?

The Worley family has been with Prayer Baptist Missions International since 1998. They are supported like any other missionary that you might know about. This monetary support helps them in many ways. They operate off of love offerings to cover expenses, but I can personally assure everyone, that you will not find a better deal than that!

What Are Some Highlights Of This Ministry?

To date, Transporters For Jesus has made around 600 moves since their inception in the middle 90’s. Though all of their moves are memorable, one stands out! While helping a church in Manhattan during September 11, 2001, they had the privilege to bring a shipment of Bibles. “It seemed everyone wanted Bibles!” Brother Worley stated.

Personal Testimony:

Just recently, my family moved to Blair, Nebraska, to start an Independent Baptist Church, from Winston,-Salem, North Carolina. We could not have found any better movers than the Worley family. They showed up on time and labored with us to get things loaded. Great personal care was given to every piece that was placed on the trailer. It meant so much to this family to have a part in our ministry that they were seen many times with tears in their eyes! I wholeheartedly recommend Transporters For Jesus!

By Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Crossway Books & Bibles

Revival is the lifeblood of a vital church. Without the fervor revival brings, the church cannot accomplish its mission in the world. Yet today’s church is rife with apathy. How can revival be rekindled? Clearly and forcefully, Dr. Lloyd-Jones describes the circumstances which produced past revivals, discerns why each generation needs revival, and shows how revival will come about today. 316 pages, paper from Crossway.

Heart To Heart With Pastor Ed Bowen – #5

Pastor Ed Bowen was saved on March 24, 1957 at a revival meeting at Horse Branch Church in Turbeville, S.C. at the age of 23. Brother Bowen has been married to his wife, Margaret, for over 54 years. After being ordained in 1960, Pastor Bowen went on to preach in various places until he became pastor of Cherryvale Baptist. Having been there for over 43 years, in 2000, he had to slow down a bit due to prostate cancer.

Though unable to do what he used to do, Pastor Ed has just changed venues. For over ten years now, he has been encouraging people via email. He has graciously agreed to be a contributing author to this website. This series of posts entitled, “Heart To Heart” are the fruit of his times with our Lord Jesus! If they mean as much to you as they do me, then EMAIL him and let him know about it!

Casting A Large Shadow

(Romans 14:7-8) “For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.”  (KJV)

In this passage, the Apostle Paul directs us to the highest form of Christianity. That is, to live by others’ consciences, and considering one’s influence, whether it influences people to God or from God. Influence is like casting a shadow, it touches others, sometimes a great number, depending upon how many people we have an opportunity to be with or around. Influence is not something we can have when we want to have it and not have it when we don’t. We cannot lay aside our influence as we will. It is something which beams out of our lives as light from a lamp. It can be something very wonderful or very grievous. It can bring great delight or much grief. We always have more influence than we think we do.

I was thinking of a story my grandmother told us when I was a child. It was about an earthquake which struck this area about 1886. At that time, her family had stopped going to church. The Bible was in the home but high upon the shelf where it was never removed. She remembers as a child when the earthquake shook their house and her father came in the door of the house. Obviously frightened, he removed the Bible from the shelf, gathered the family around him and read the Bible and had prayer. The following Sunday he took his family to church. I can point back to that occasion and be grateful for an earthquake that influenced my grandmother to be the Bible woman she was. Her father’s shadow of influence has now reached from his own generation, to my grandmother’s, to my mother’s, to my own, then to my children’s, and to my grandchildren’s, and now, to our 9 great grandchildren. That is seven generations which has covered over 123 years. That is one man’s shadow of influence. My grandmother had 2 sisters and 2 brothers, so many more people were influenced by that single commitment, on a certain day in 1886. “He being dead yet speaketh,” as Abel of old.

I hasten to add that influence does not save. We still have freedom to choose for ourselves. Influence of godly parents and people give us the opportunity to make the right choices. A child can be reared in a Christian home and be lost forever. He must be born again. A godly influence enhances ones opportunity to make a decision for Christ.

There is another side of influence, that of evil influence. I’m sure you, as I, can think of all the trouble you’ve gotten into because someone influenced you to do wrong. It was your choice but you had help making it.  That is what we can do for each other… we can help others make the right choices though we cannot choose for them.

I related this story to an inmate at Wateree Prison one Saturday afternoon in about 1995. He responded to it by stating that no one in his family had ever attended church on a regular basis. I suggested that he could be the first in his family to lead in establishing a spiritual legacy. Who knows how many may be rightly influenced by such a decision made on a certain day.

Pastor Ed Bowen

Conclusion

I wholeheartedly agree with Brother Bowen. All of us cast a shadow. Some larger than others! As a pastor, the larger the potential of our influence. Oh, how we who pastor must be careful in our life so we can have a positive influence upon others!
