Pastor, What Is Driving Your Ministry

Much can be learned about an institution by what motivates it to perform. The individual factors which drive the various departments and over all functions of the establishment can be quite interesting. Whether viewing the political landscape, college campuses, small businesses or local churches, one can gather what urges these groups to do what they do. Whether pastors and congregations admit this or not, the fact of the matter is that the driving force behind each local assembly can be quite obvious.

The Driving Force Of A Church Should Be The Mission Statement!

The driving force behind any local assembly must be derived from its Mission Statement. If this is not spelled out in writing, then it should be commonly known among the membership. Could someone in your church clearly articulate the purpose of your church’s activities? They surely know what you are doing and why you seem to be doing it, but are their assumptions correct? If so, are they Biblical and fueled by righteous inclinations?

Sad to say, many churches are motivated and driven by the machinery and a host of other things while increasing the distance between themselves and what they were original moored upon. These moorings are the principles and precepts from God’s Holy Word! Oh, how we have come a long way… haven’t we?

Listed below are four, common, driving forces in churches. They do not originate from any church’s Mission Statement, nor will you find them readily admitted too, though obvious to the casual observer.

Tradition

Many churches operate in a starchy, antiquated manner and have very little vision or desire to do anything but what they have always done. Of course, what they HAVE done is always referred to in the past tense because they are NOT doing anything in the present tense. Though a harsh assessment, this is REALITY in many places.

Instead of a spiritual awakening to get back on course, a counterfeit Christianity has emerged. While tradition can be good as Paul described it (2 Thessalonians 3:6 & 2 Timothy 2:2), everything a church does must be based solely upon the Scriptures or it will fail!!!

Personalities

People can dominate the landscape of a church and drive it THEIR direction. Whether it is a pastor, or a regular church member doing this, Jesus Christ should be preeminent. When Jesus is not allowed His proper place, and, in His stead, a personality is running the show, then disaster is on the horizon.

Diotrephes (3 John 1:9) is a prime example of how a personality can drive a local assembly. The problems really come in the wake of a sinful fall, or when the leader has gone. Many churches had the pastor’s convictions and when he left the convictions left. Often a dictatorship results in a church over compensating in the next pastor. The church will usually not let the pastor lead. They fear of another monarchy!

Finances

If a church is not driven by tradition or personality, then it could, quite possibly, be driven by money. “God pays for what He orders!” “Where He guides, He also provides!” “A church must be walking by FAITH!” If these statements are our mantras, then why does the Almighty dollar tend to dictate what we do in a church?

A good leader will always count the cost, but the deciding factor for doing or not doing something should not solely rest in the finances. Any church who is driven by money, whether to grow a large income or from frugality born from fear, is in a sinful and a huge trap. It will bring a church’s ministry to a grinding halt! When, “How much will it cost?” is the question and not, “What does God want?”, then you know you have a problem.

Programs

Sometimes good things can become bad things. When one particular ministry determines the bulk of what a church does, then it has become driven by that program. This is not healthy at all. A church must carry out the whole mission of Christ’s church. When the church “cherry picks” what it will and will not do, then it might as well stop calling itself a church. Programs are only when in their proper place!

Conclusion

Much can be stated and debated about what drives a church to do what it does. One can be certain that what drives a church is obvious to the world, and will mature into a harvest of some sort. Many pastors and church members seem to be oblivious to what drives them even though it is plain to everyone else. May God’s people wake up and get back to the BOOK of the AGES! May we once again seek to make the Bible the sole basis of our faith and PRACTICE!

660487: Rut, Rot, or Revival Rut, Rot, or Revival

By A.W. Tozer / Wingspread Publishers

In typical Tozer style and wit, Rut, Rot, or Revival challenges “sleeping” Christians to get out of their ecclesiastical ruts. Its chapters were originally preached as sermons at Avenue Road Alliance Church in Toronto. Whether spoken or written, Tozer’s words were designed to “promote personal heart religion” among God’s people.

9 Truths About Salvation That Every Pastor Needs To Proclaim

Preacher, Proclaim Salvation’s Story!

There are numerous topics that a preacher can speak about, but none so precious and important as the doctrine of salvation. What the Bible says about sin, the sinner, Heaven and Hell is very serious. The ramifications of one’s knowledge about these particular issues has eternal consequences. This post seeks to point out some essential precepts that must be proclaimed by God’s men concerning salvation!

The following outline was taken from a Sunday School Series taught by Pastor Roger Luiken of Liberty Baptist Church of Fremont, Nebraska.

Listed below are nine very important truths about salvation!

#1 – You Can Know That You Are Saved

(1 John 5:12-13) “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”  (KJV)

Salvation is very important in the eyes of God and He has made it very plain that He wants people to know they have it!

#2 – A Minority Of People Are Truly Saved

(Matthew 7:13-14) “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”  (KJV)

Just because it is very clear that few get saved does not give us the right to give up on people.

#3 – Some People Will Deceive Themselves Into Thinking That They Are Saved

(Matthew 7:21-23) “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”  (KJV)

These verses are some of the saddest ones in the Bible. In view of this, it is apparent that what people believe about how one is saved has a direct influence upon their soul’s destination. This is a fearful passage! One must remember that salvation is built upon Christ and not works!

#4 – There Will Be Carnal Christians… This Is A Reality

(1 Corinthians 3:1-3) “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”  (KJV)

We must remember that some, who get saved, will not grow up in Christ. If the Apostle Paul had this problem, then what does that say for us?

#5 – Sometimes It Is Hard To Distinguish Between The Saved And The Lost

(2 Peter 2:4-8) “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)”  (KJV)

It is not hard to grasp the fact that Noah was a saved man in the Bible. Lot, however, is a horse of a different color. If it were not for the verses shown above, nobody would say that Lot was saved. Thus we can conclude that some people… well… only God knows they are saved!

#6 – Every Christian Should Be Growing

(2 Peter 3:16-18) “As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”  (KJV)

Everyone, who is saved, should be following RIGHT teaching. They should be GROWING in Christ!

#7 – There Is An Important Relationship Between Faith And Works

What salvation looks like before you get saved…

(Ephesians 2:8-10) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”  (KJV)

What salvation looks like after you are saved…

(James 2:14-20) “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?”  (KJV)

Many think the scriptures contradict each other here in these two passages, but we must understand that faith in Jesus’ shed blood alone is what saves a person. That same individual, who is truly saved, will produce works… to some degree!

#8 – You Cannot Lose Your Salvation

(John 3:36) “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”  (KJV)

There are numerous verse that prove this truth about salvation. This one is very clear!

#9 – There Will Be Rewards At The Judgment Seat Of Christ

(Romans 14:12) “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”  (KJV)

(1 Corinthians 3:11-15) “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”  (KJV)

(2 Corinthians 5:6-10) “Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”  (KJV)

Every saved person will be rewarded for their good works. These same works are not what saves them. These people perform good works because they are saved!

Conclusion

So much can be said about salvation. Ask 100 people how to get to Heaven and you will get 102 different answers. The fact of the matter is that we must stick with the Bible and what it says about the subject of salvation. Preacher, Proclaim It!

Good Pastors And Preachers Know The Difference Between Taunting And Preaching

From the pulpit, to video/audio posts on the internet, to the street corner and beyond, many preachers and pastors seek to spread the news about Jesus Christ! Sincere, passionate, courageous, AND __________ (you fill in the blank) these men continue this work without reservation of mind. In the midst of such a noble endeavor, a question has been forced upon me. “Is it possible to do something right and go about it the wrong way?” In reference to a specific situation I recently encountered, I write this post and make the following statement: Good pastors and preachers KNOW the difference between taunting and preaching!

Is God Honored By My Preaching?

For a while now, I have be thinking about the privilege of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His Divinely Inspired Word. What an honor it is that God would want ME to preach for HIM! I wonder though… “Is God honored by my preaching?” Every preacher must ask himself that question from time to time. If he does not, then he is likely to be doing what he loves to do, but causing more harm than good. Nobody wants to be guilty of this. NOBODY!

Am I Detracting From The Gospel?

Proclaiming the gospel under: the promise from God that His Word will not return void (Isaiah 55:11); the fact that the gospel has power (Romans 1:16); the plain command to preach it (Isaiah 58:1; 2 Timothy 4:2); and a plethora of Biblical examples of leather-lunged prophets who dared to herald forth God’s message, many have taken refuge to condone and excuse their taunts, rants, and mean spirits. While the above scriptural references are all true and believed by this preacher, they are not to be used to grant a license for non-Biblical methodology. It is entirely possible to preach God’s Word without taunting people and acting like a 6 year old on a playground. You can preach BOLDLY and DIRECTLY without detracting the gospel.

Why Do Some Pastors And Preachers, At Times, Taunt Their Audience?

I do not know for sure why people do this sometimes. It might be from anger and they are lashing out. It could be from insecurity issues. Publicity stunts for a camera shot are certainly not out of the question. I feel that it is mostly from personality quirks left unchecked. Whatever the reason, it is FLESH, FLESH, FLESH! God the Holy Ghost CAN use this type preaching because He is God. After all, He used a donkey to reach a man in the Old Testament. Though God CAN use taunts and tirades to reach people, it is certainly not the normal way God worked as seen in the Biblical pattern.

Is Street Preaching A Breeding Ground For This Behavior?

Street preaching is a venue that is Biblical and needed more and more in this country (USA). I am for it 1,000,000 percent! It is difficult to do and not for the faint of heart. Due to the audience you, many times, have when street preaching, there is a tendency to be reactionary. Getting off script, so to speak, results in dialogue that was not intended or would not normally be engaged in. Most of the street preachers in this country, who are preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, do what needs to be done in a Biblical way, and are not kooks nor cultists. It is a severe minority, who use this great method of evangelism to pontificate, that I feel gives a bad name for everyone else.

Conclusion

Anytime you criticize, constructively or non-constructively, someone’s motives and/or methods you will run the risk of being taken the wrong way. In view of this fact, I want to be clearly understood. Giving the benefit of the doubt, and operating under the assumption that pastors and preachers who taunt, at times, while they are preaching are sincere and genuine, I wholeheartedly applaud their desire to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. I am, however, very much opposed to their taunts. Let us be CLEAR, to my knowledge, in the King James Bible I possess, I do not recall an incident where Jesus Christ ever, I repeat, EVER taunted anyone! There is absolutely NOBiblical justification for taunting while preaching from the Holy Word of God!
