A Pastoral Thanksgiving Acrostic

Photo showing some of the aspects of a traditi...Image via Wikipedia

Anticipating Thanksgiving Day 2010, I was pondering the character traits, and personal responsibilities of pastoral leadership. It is good to meditate upon this from time to time; especially if you want to grow as a spiritual leader. While in the midst of this deep thought process, I was also pondering the need of being thankful for sound pastoral leadership. The utmost care must be taken when doing something like this… lol! You never know what you might get when entering the “ACROSTIC ZONE“!

Listed below is an acrostic of sorts. Taking the phrase “Happy Thanksgiving“, I made a reminder, of what a pastor should be, using this common holiday greeting. I hope it encourages you!

504397: The Plight of Man and the Power of God The Plight of Man and the Power of God

By Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Christian Heritage

Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ preaching always had an emphasis on the desperate plight of man and the power of God to save. His preaching was crystal clear on the sovereignty of God in the salvation of sinners, a concept that does not sit comfortably in our day of pragmatism, programmes and self-help books. Nevertheless it remains at the core of what the world needs to hear. Based on Romans 1, this wonderful book will help you understand what the gospel is. When we live in a world that is spiralling out of control we will want to hear this message again and again.

What Pastors Can Learn From A Box

Jesus, throughout His earthly ministry, often used simple and ordinary things to bring out a spiritual truth. He spoke of seed & soil, bread & water, light & darkness, and so on. I want to take an episode from just before his incarceration by the mob, subsequent trial and crucifixion when he was at the house of Simon the leper in Bethany to mine out some sparkling gems for spiritual leaders! We find this record in Mark 14:3-9

(Mark 14:3-9) “And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.”  (KJV)

The Box Itself

The box, of which we are referring, is said to be an “alabaster” box. Alabaster was a sub-variety of lime. It is often found in large deposits around limestone caverns. It is usually white in color and was sometimes used to make containers. Thus, boxes made from alabaster were usually referred to as such because they were made from that material.

The Apostle Paul, when speaking of the gospel in 2 Corinthians 4:7, states, “we have this treasure in earthen vessels”. The costly contents of Mary’s box were encased by an earthen vessel. It behooves us, who shepherd God’s children, to remember that we are but earthen vessels; nothing more! We cannot add one inch to our height, and we cannot make the sun to stand still.

Though only an earthen vessel, we can still be a vessel for God to use. We should carry the gospel to folks all around us. We should not hide the gospel as Paul warned the Corinthian believers in 2 Corinthians 4:3. Pastor, with all your might, strive to be a vessel God CAN use! (2 Timothy 2:21)

The Contents Of The Box

The alabaster box which Mary had was carrying a perfume made of spikenard. The spikenard plant is from the East Indies and its root is used to produce an aromatic liquid. Though the plant has a long, slender stem, it has little ears that are prickly and thus is often referred to as “spikenard”.

Mary sought to anoint Jesus with this costly perfume. When complaints were made according to Mark 14:5, we see that what Mary gave was sacrificial. It was a gift equal to about a year’s worth of wages. Nothing was too much for Mary as she anointed her King of kings and Lord of lords. When was the last time you saw someone or heard of an individual giving a one time gift which altered their standard of living?

We, who are saved by God’s grace, are carrying a treasure (gospel of Jesus Christ/indwelling Holy Spirit) in earthen vessels. May we endeavor to remember this great truth! Anyone who knew of Mary’s box understood that it contained something valuable. May we bear a testimony of the saving grace of Almighty God each and every day!

The Purpose Of Such A Box

The purpose of the box was to contain the perfume in an environment where it would keep until needed. More than likely, it was sealed with wax so the spikenard liquid could not escape or leak out. As Mary had a purpose for her box, so God has a divine purpose for our lives.

Pastor, have you gotten over the fact that God has called you into the ministry. Assuming, of course, He has called you, have you grown stale in your mission of life? Have the souls of those whom you are entrusted become an irritation to you? You must revive yourself upon the truth that you are a divinely filled vessel to carry the precious treasure of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world!

The Fate Of The Box

This box had one purpose and one purpose only. It was to hold the perfume until it was to be used. The box is stated to have been broken. Whether some sort of wax seal was broken, the box was physically broken into pieces, or a combination of both, I am not sure. I do know that nobody present in the room enjoyed the sweet smell of the perfume until the box was broken.

God’s men are no different in this regard. We are to carry forth the message from God. That is our sole purpose in ministry. When God brakes us through our personal worship, trials, sickness, or through some other instrument of His omniscient choosing, He does so that folks might see what we are carrying on the inside! Better yet, they are able to enjoy the sweetness of God’s Holy Ghost as He works in our lives.

Conclusion

There are many ways to apply this great event in our lives as believers. As Jesus so often used simple things to illustrate a great truth, so we have tried to do in highlighting Mary’s alabaster box.

Let us recap… Pastor, you are a vessel, you carry a valuable message, you have one main purpose, and you WILLbe broken! May God bless you as you strive to do His will for your life!

Why Some Churches Cannot Keep A Pastor

It is not uncommon these days to find a church looking for a new pastor every couple of years. Though some denominations rotate their ministers into new pastorates in a cycle, usually four year increments, many groups do so because of internal problems which are not by design. Is Christ honored by the changing of pastors because of unresolved problems and conflict? Is it healthy for a community to endure the endless procession of ministers through their hamlet? This post seeks to shed some light as to why this seems to happen so often.

In my years of ministry, I have narrowed down this issue into the three most common reasons as to why churches cannot seem to keep a pastor. Though there are other issues that can be addressed like a declining membership due to the local economy in relation to meeting the financial obligation of a particular pastor and simply picking the wrong pastor, most churches, who are on a continual search for a pastor, are infected with a problem which seems to plague them for many years.

Personality Conflict

A common problem that surfaces in the ministry is that of personality conflict. Let’s face it, some people are not going to sit under certain pastors. That is understandable and inevitable. Assuming the church picked the right pastor according to God’s will, people who cannot remain under a certain pastor should seek to find another church, if possible, where they can grow and mature. What usually happens, in this case of personality conflict, is a family or families campaign to remove the pastor and have the church find a new one.

Now you would think that after a pastor or two in a seven or eight year stretch would cure the problem, but it doesn’t. Many times, it is not the same people who campaign. With each cycle the players change up and the church spirals ever downward. Sometimes it is the pastor’s fault and other times it is the congregations fault. Either way, if a church rids itself of a pastor due to the campaigning of a family over conflicting personalities, then the church will likely repeat the misfortune again and again.

Power Struggle

Another common issue in a local church which results in the perpetual search of a pastor is that of a power struggle. The question becomes, “Who is going to be the pastor?” Granted, there are many dictatorial personalities occupying the pulpits of many churches, but that is not the sole issue and not the case 100% of the time.

In ANY venue, where there are people rallying to a common purpose, there has to be order. Whether it is a little league baseball group or a business on main street, there must be an orderly chain of command and responsibility. The secular world understands this, but many of God’s people forget it. Furthermore, God has set things up so there will be the proper and orderly way of conducting the affairs in His church.

Many times I have seen churches divided and conquered by a domineering family or group who thinks they can do better than their pastor. Constant backbiting, gossiping, and numerous other sins are committed by these self-righteous people. Thinking they are doing God’s service by ridding themselves of this awful man, they, in fact, aid Satan in defeating the purposes of God for that church.

I have seen a power struggle take place numerous times and the people involved do not know or understand that they are the issue. They honestly cannot see that they are the hindrance to keeping a pastor. What’s worse, is the pastors are limited so much that they cannot overcome the issue. It is such an unfortunate circumstance.

Poor Ministry Philosophy

No matter how you slice it, philosophy of ministry has a huge impact on a congregation. With each new pastors that comes along, he will seek to project his vision and philosophy. If this happens to a congregation numerous times in a relative short span of years, then it can become a cancer in the church. This is especially true when a pastor and church are miles apart in their ideology. Even after carefully selecting a pastor, this conflict can arise.

Churches are generational. That is, it will have to reach each successive generation if it is to perpetuate. Churches are either going to be a center for ministry and a place to carry out the Biblical mandates for its existence or it will become a social club. If the ministry philosophy of a church adopts situation ethics, or begins to distance itself from its Biblical mandates, then it will soon start losing pastors. Basically, poor ministry philosophy will send a pastor down the road!

Conclusion

While this post has not fully expounded all of the possible reasons why some churches cannot seem to keep a pastor, it has given some common factors which fertilize this awful situation. Remember that God gives pastors to churches for many reasons. When pastors move too rapidly, then churches cannot mature as well. Consider:

(Ephesians 4:11-16) “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.” (KJV)

Pastors and churches have to work together to accomplish what God intends for them to do. Splits and splinters only serve to benefit Satan. Finding new leadership energized by selfish motivations will never be right! I hope that this post has mentioned something that would help a fellow Christian deal with this plague.
