3 Fold Look At A Pastor’s Heart

Pastor Andrew SchankWhile missionaries, evangelists and pastors are preachers, there is a tremendous difference between the office and the ability to preach. Missionaries are gifted differently than evangelists and pastors… and vice versa. The fact of the matter is that a true to definition pastor must have a heart for the position given to him by God’s Holy Spirit. To any Spirit filled believer, it is apparent that the heart of the matter is the pastor’s heart.

3 Fold Look At A Pastor’s Heart

(Jeremiah 12:10-11) “Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness. They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.”  (KJV)

A Pastor Must Have A Love For God

It is a sad commentary that we even have to mention this aspect of a pastor’s heart, but we must. Though there are some so-called pastors, who would be better off selling cars, and that are causing irreparable harm to local assemblies, a vast majority are still doing their best for the Lord Jesus. Just because there are crooked doctors in the workplace, not every physician is dishonest. So it is with pastors. All to often, the world lumps us all in the same basket.

It is primary for a true pastor to have an unrivaled love for his God. Jesus mentioned this essential when He spoke about the greatest commandment in Matthew 22:37-38 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.” (KJV) What motivates a pastor to keep going against the current is that he LOVES Jesus Christ more than anything!

It is from this well that pastors draw from to carry out their daily ministry. When that well runs dry or is stopped up with debris from the Phillistines, then stagnation, regression, and eventual death will be seen in that pastor’s life. This is why it is so vital that every pastor, especially those that work a public job along side their pastoral duties, keep their personal fellowship close with Jesus.

(1 John 1:7) “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”  (KJV)

A Pastor Must Have A Love For Family

Hirelings care for one thing: self preservation. In fact, they worry very little for the families that make up the local assembly. A God called pastor will be anxious about the welfare of his families and especially his own. One of the Apostle Paul’s concerns for qualified men was that they lovingly care for their own families!

(1 Timothy 3:5) “(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)”  (KJV)

This love for family will guide him as he preaches for his tone will be that of a concerned father caring for his child. Furthermore, his actions, though firm, will be respected by those admonished because of the love overshadowing the circumstance. Love for family members goes a long ways and so it is with true pastors.

A Pastor Must Have A Love For Work

We joke a lot about how preachers know that they are called to preach. However, waking up from sleep with a hunger for fried chicken and absolutely no desire to work is NOT the proper axiom. Pastors are the hardest working people on the planet. While there are some matters of labor which require more physical exertion, there is no more a demanding job than that of pastoring a congregation.

(2 Timothy 2:25) “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;”  (KJV)

Pastors must work hard if they are to last. There must be a strong love for work and THE WORK! Sacrifice, is not a strong enough of term to illustrate the true nature of the demands on a pastor. Studying is hard work! Praying is hard work! Working with people is hard work! Pastors must love to labor among his congregation is he is to measure up.

10 Opportunities Every Pastor Has

Opportunity has been defined as a chance for advancement, progress, or profit as well as a favorable circumstance or occasion. Pastors have these all the time, though many pass by unnoticed. Why is that? Maybe it is because we are not LOOKING for them as opportunities.

A Sudden Realization…

I had a friend growing up, who always spoke about seeing deer and turkeys along the roadside while driving to school or church. I always wondered why he saw them and I didn’t. I traveled the same road and didn’t see anything. A few years ago it suddenly dawned upon me that the reason he saw them and I didn’t was the he was actively LOOKING for those animals. I learned a valuable truth by this realization. If we do not LOOK for God’s blessings, or, in this case, Providential opportunities, then it is very likely that we will miss them altogether!

Listed below are 10 common opportunities that pastors have. It is entirely possible that one has not viewed these as opportunities. It is also likely that one has just thought of them as things done in the way of duty and not opportune gifts from God. It suffices to say that these ten items are opportunities that every pastor has and should be thankful for.

10 Opportunities Every Pastor Has

  1. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Represent Christ In The Church As His Under-shepherd.
  2. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Intercede For His People. (ex. Moses)
  3. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Serve His People. (We used to say that so-and-so was serving in a church as pastor)
  4. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Feed His Flock Through The Pulpit Ministry And In Various Teaching Capacities.
  5. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Evangelize His Community.
  6. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Help Those People That Very Few Care About In The Community. (People that don’t and won’t tithe or add anything substantive to the church by way of talent, etc.)
  7. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Lead A Local Congregation While Making A World-Wide Impact Through Missions.
  8. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Have A Part In Making A Difference In Individual’s Lives Every Week.
  9. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Have A “Job” That He Couldn’t Live Without.
  10. Every Pastor Has The OPPORTUNITY To Invest His Life In Eternal Things!

Conclusion…

Can you see how these things are OPPORTUNITIES? Hopefully this will serve to encourage you in your ministry today!

Pastor, Are You Still Wounded?

Not too long ago, I was in a great preacher’s meeting in Union, South Carolina. Welcome Baptist Church has wonderful services every year in August for lay preachers, pastors, evangelists and missionaries. Pastor Robert Jarvis asked a particular man to come up and preach. During the message, this man of God shared a battle that his family faced in the ministry a few years ago. Little did he know, that as he was sharing his story, God gave him a statement that helped many of us. The statement which this brother shared was concerning the difference in scars and wounds.

(Job 14:1) “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.”  (KJV)

Scars and wounds! You know… there is a big difference. Wounds have not healed, but scars have. Pastor, are you still licking wounds from yesteryear or have they lost their sting, healed over, leaving only a scar? WOW! What a thought!

Wounds…

Wounds are injuries experienced which are still bleeding and/or tender. They still have to be nurtured and salve must be applied to the bandage. Great care must be exercised as you or someone qualified sets the broken bones, cauterizes the infection and sterilizes the wound. Wounds hurt, sting, bring great discomfort and usually affect those around you.

The word “wound” can be used to describe what happens to us as Christians sometimes. Every pastor is a target of Satan. His fiery darts are allowed to fly their way, at times, for reasons usually known only by God. Church splits, slander, verbal attacks against family, lies, dissension, the proverbial “knife in the back”, and open division are just a few of the wounds a pastor and his family can face. Believe it or not, this is hard not to take personal.

Scars…

Scars are injuries that have ceased to be wounds. They have healed over. Though there is visible evidence that an injury has taken place, there is no hurting when touched. It takes time to for this to happen. We should remind ourselves from this time to time!

One important thing that scars do for us, is that they remind us of God’s provision. Yes, we cannot overlook this fact. When we look at the scars, so to speak, in our life, we can see where, perhaps, we made mistakes, but we also see the grace of God in it all! It is visible proof that God takes care of His own! Others can see this tangible evidence in your life and find it a great resource for them.

Moving Forward…

I have mentioned all of the above to get at this question: “Pastor are you still wounded?” Sometimes we think we are over stuff. However, if we haven’t and we say we have, then we are making things worse. Bitterness will infect your personality and paralyze your ministry. Your speech and actions towards people will be tainted with poison. You may not even see it, but it will be seen by others.

We have to move on. Striving for this in the energy of the flesh is just as bad as perpetually licking wounds. A serious involvement in prayer and Bible principle is the only cure along with God’s grace as time distances you from the injury!

Bottom Line…

Here is the bottom line… Pastor, if it still stings, then you don’t have a scar! If there is no scar, then you still have a wound. If you still have a wound, then you had better see to it that it doesn’t get infected any further and cause you, as well as, others more heartache! Consider this great verse…

(Ephesians 4:32) “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”  (KJV)

Alert…

If you or someone you know has a wound, then seek out the Great Physician for his healing balm.
