The Attitude Of A Pastor

Airbus A380Image via Wikipedia

Anyone familiar with flying an aircraft will state that a fundamental, aeronautical truth is that the ATTITUDE of an airplane will have a direct effect on the ALTITUDE of the plane. “Nose down” means that you are headed towards the Earth. “Nose up” means that you are headed skyward. The ATTITUDE of the nose of the aircraft, as directed by the flaps and rudder, will determine the rate of descent or ascent. In other words, “ATTITUDE DETERMINES ALTITUDE!” Such it is with pastoring a church. The quality of ministry in any local assembly is greatly determined by the ATTITUDE of its leadership.

There are two important areas of a pastor’s life which he must be careful with concerning his attitude.

#1 – The Pastor’s Countenance

(1 Timothy 4:12) “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”  (KJV)

The local church will take on the personality of its pastor. The longer he is there, the more its members will resemble its leader in attitude and such. In view of this truth, answer the following questions about the attitude of your personal leadership as pastor.

  • Pastor, are you repressive or optimistic?
  • Pastor, are you problem oriented or solution oriented?
  • Pastor, are you in despair, or a ray of hope?
  • Pastor, are you tense or are you relaxed?

The attitude which you consistently project will be what you end up working with overall. Yes, there is a learning curve in the ministry, but beware of how you display your attitude. Pretending will wear off after a while. Your true nature will shine forth regardless of how you dress it up. It is best to work on your attitude so it is genuinely pleasing to Christ!

#2 – The Pastor’s Mind

(2 Corinthians 10:5) “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”  (KJV)

My grandma used to say that the idle mind is the Devil’s workshop. I feel that she did not miss the truth by far! One of a pastor’s most valuable assets is his mind. Satan surely knows this and will seek to wage war. The #1 battlefield of a man of God is not with the lost man, the world in general, nor his wayward church family. It is within his own body, and his own faculties. The battlefield is in the pastor’s MIND!

Two dangers to be noted here:

Intimidation –  We should not be intimidated, but many times our attitude lends itself to this. God warned Ezekiel about this issue. Study Ezekiel 2:6 and the context within the surrounding verses. This is surely helpful to the intimidated preacher of God’s Word!

(Proverbs 29:25) “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.”  (KJV)

Spiritual Inferiority Complex – When we get our eyes off of Jesus and on ourselves, then we will end up feeliing abnormally inferior. Worry, and its cousins will rob us of the fire and zeal which are so needed to inspire the confidence of those we serve.

(Philippians 4:13) “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”  (KJV)

Consider a few questions about your mind…

  • Pastor, is your mind clear or cluttered?
  • Pastor, is your mind virtuous or grotesque?
  • Pastor, is your mind sharp or seared with sin’s desensitizing power?
  • Pastor, is your mind occupied with other folk’s needs or just about your needs?
  • Pastor, is your mind centered upon Christ or upon carnal amusements?

Conclusion

Make no mistake about this issue. Attitude determines altitude! Our countenance will reveal what is on our minds and our minds will feed our countenance. It is in everyone’s best interest to faithfully follow Christ and keep a good attitude about life so as to be a sharper tool in the omnipotent hand of our Master!

8 Principles For Pastoral Leadership

3D Team Leadership Arrow ConceptImage by lumaxart via Flickr

There is a famine in our land today, among God’s people, of solid leadership. Sure, you can fill a position in a local assembly, but have you really gotten yourselves a godly leader? Every child of God needs to be a godly leader, and they need one too! As we consider this subject, contemplate the following 8 principles of  leadership.
8 Principles Of Leadership

#1 – Leadership Involves Qualification

I Timothy 3:1-15 is just one of many passages that deal with qualification for leadership. In the context of these verses, specifically, Paul is speaking about qualification for pastors/spiritual leadership/deacons and their immediate family. Many in the United States, culturally speaking, are far removed from the historical background of this passage and its implications. To even be considered in the running for such an office meant that you were putting yourself in harm’s way! Martyrdom certainly not excluded. Out of the relatively few willing… of that group, the standard was set high. Much like the Levites and Priests of the Old Testament, God’s men, though not perfect, had to meet certain standards. NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN THAT REGARD! What’s more, not only should someone be qualified, but they must be proven!

#2 – Leadership Involves Obedience To God

In the truest sense of the term, leadership implicates someone to be obedient to the leader. If someone is a spiritual leader, then they themselves must adhere to God’s Word themselves. How can they point others the way, if they are on the wrong path? Furthermore, when studying Biblical leaders, you will find that their short comings and sins were paid for and it hurt their leadership capabilities. The “Bathsheba Episode” in King David’s life hindered him greatly. Had he been obedient to the Lord in his morals, who knows, maybe things would have turned out better?

#3 – Leadership Involves Discernment

Much like being in a juror’s box, discernment is critical. Effective leadership hinges upon being able to know your limitations as well as being able to size up other people. No spiritual leader can discern effectively without being filled with the Holy Ghost! He leads into all truth!

#4 – Leadership Involves Temperance

Self control is vital to having an even keel in leading others. Though winds blow and waves rise high, pastors and other men of God, must exercise self control in their leadership. Many a pastor has lost his ministry in a fit of unbridled behavior. King Saul, of the Old Testament, is a prime example of someone who had no temperance.

#5 – Leadership Involves Communication

Much like the communication in the home, if a leader is to point the way, then they must convey the “what”, “where”, “when”, “why”, and especially the “how”! This principle is one of the first to go before trouble ensues. Show me a serious church problem, and I will point out lack of clear communication. By definition, communication not only involves the proclamation, but the acceptance of the proclamation. People may not agree with what has been communicated, but they have to KNOW what has been heralded.

#6 – Leadership Involves Example

A lady once said, “I would rather see a sermon in shoes than hear one any day!” How true this is for most! Leadership without example is like being a mother and not caring for her children. Example is the fine tuning of the message from the pulpit and lectern. As one is encouraged to rise high to the occasions of life, so must the leader be the example of that very admonishment.

#7 – Leadership Involves Motivation

The ability to communicate, evaluate, and illustrate is one thing, but to motivate is quite another behemoth. This is one of the most discouraging issues pastors face! Week after week, we invite people to the table. They are fed, and warmed, but few get up from the table and wash the dishes! Furthermore, fewer are inclined to get off of the front porch and labor in the field. Most would rather sit at the table, and relax on the porch than to allow a drop of sweat fall from their brow! In spite of this issue, an effective leader will motivate!

#8 – Leadership Involves Adjustment

Like the archer of the woods, every spiritual leader must allow for windage. Things often change in the midst of any endeavor that you are leading people in. Being able to think on your feet is very important. Seeing the bigger picture helps to guide the way! Mired down in the muck and mire of circumstances often silences the leader’s voice. Being able to take a moment, stepping back, looking for the bigger picture helps everyone!

Conclusion

These 8 principles are just a few of the important things that an effective spiritual leader will be constantly working on. Every seasoned pastor will echo this sentiment. May every pastor, missionary, evangelist, and child of God seek to acquire these principles as well as to help their spiritual leaders do the same!

Pastor, What Does The Ministry Mean To You

Do you remember that first day on your new job? You know what I mean. The great and fuzzy feeling about the new employer and the fact that you actually liked what you were doing! Do you also remember how it was, a month later, when the newness wore off? I guess we have all felt that way before about some job we have had in the past. The ministry, however, should never be seen this way. The honeymoon period of taking a new church does come to an end, but that should not deter you one iota! After all, we are in the King’s business!

It Is A Privilege

(1 Timothy 1:12) “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;”  (KJV)

The ministry, as we term it, usually refers to serving in a full time capacity. Whether you are a traveling Evangelist or a Missionary and Pastor, the ministry is something special. However you define it, every child of God realizes that it is a gift from God! He could have chosen other people to do what we are doing, but He chose us. What a privilege!

It Is A Divine Appointment

(1 Corinthians 9:16) “For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!”  (KJV)

You never see the Apostle Paul referring to his apostleship as some job that he could take or leave. It was a necessity and a mandate! When one has this high and exalted view of ministry, then you tend to be more serious about the job which lay before you.

It Is An Opportunity

(2 Corinthians 4:1) “Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;”  (KJV)

The ministry is an opportunity to serve like none other. With all of Heaven behind you and every soul you meet a prospect, what other business could one be in with such a vast opportunity to pursue? God has mercifully given each servant of Christ a part to play and a task to accomplish! There is no reason to quit with such an opportunity like the ministry!

It Is A Calling You Cannot Shirk

(Romans 11:29) “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.”  (KJV)

God puts the desire in your heart for the ministry and it lays there in such a way that you cannot dabble in it. You must be all in or not at all! The ministry is not just a second chance or a last resort. It is not some venture that is pursued because there is nothing else to do! God calls a man and puts him into the ministry! Praise the Lord for this!

Conclusion

The ministry is all of the above and much more! Nehemiah summed it up best when he refused to come off of the wall because he was doing “a great work”. Oh, how we need more with this lofted view of the ministry! Laying one block at a time till the job is complete!
