Questions For Pastors When Being Forced Out

Hurricane_off_FloridaImage via Wikipedia

I have not read any statistics on this lately, but I am sure that a vast majority, upwards of 90%, of pastors have faced the situation of being forced out of the church in which they pastor. It is never a pretty picture, and usually ends in a bad way. Why does this happen? Should a pastor ever leave? Though these questions seem to be easily answered, it is not so simple when you are in the middle of the hurricane fighting to strengthen the things that remain!

Sometimes you feel that nobody cares about you. Having faced a form of this on a couple of occasions, I know exactly how it feels when the people that you love, pray for, help, and would die for, want to see you leave. It is also quite amazing how a pastor is treated by his fellow preachers when he does leave. It seems that when a pastor shares all of the gory details, making himself look good, that pastors are quick to get behind him. However, when a pastor tries to keep things “hush hush”, somehow he is always the problem; obviously hiding something. The truth of the matter is that neither scenario is 100% accurate.

Listed below are some questions that a pastor should ask himself when he feels that he is being forced out!

#1 – Pastor, Are You Digging The Hole Yourself?

  • Many times, pastors are the ones who are digging the hole in which they find themselves.
  • Look around and see if there are others in the hole with you!

#2 – Pastor, Are You Doing Right?

  • Sometimes, as pastors, we forget that we are capable of being the problem.
  • Before we dogmatically place blame upon certain members of the congregation, let us be sure that we are not guilty of some sin; public or private!
  • Like God did with King Saul, He might be allowing trouble to come our way to chasten us!

#3 – Pastor, Are You Seeking God’s Glory Or Your Own?

  • Being a glory hound will bring a church split in a hurry.
  • Your agenda, reputation, and will is not what is most important, no matter how spiritual you make think they are.
  • Pride in our own lives can be subtle and hard to detect.

#4 – Pastor, Are You Falling On The Wrong Sword?

  • Sometimes the issues (SURFACE ISSUE) which precipitate the forcing out of a pastor are complicated, but they can be rightly discerned.
  • Is the issue you are dieing over worth it?

#5 – Pastor, Are You Walking With God?

  • Being in the center of God’s will is what is most important!
  • Contrary to popular opinion, it is sometimes the will of God to clear off a spot and do like Moses and Joshua… “Who is on the LORD’s side” – “Choose you this day”
  • No matter how bleak things might seem, knowing for certain, the will of God brings comfort!

#6 – Pastor, Are You In Consultation With Your Pastor Or Another Objective Brother?

  • When in a difficult situation like is being described in this post, one needs help from their pastor.
  • War should not be waged alone, and it should not be waged by twins either. Don’t surround yourself with people who you know to be 100% agreeable with you.
  • A fresh pair of eyes can make the difference between victory and disaster!

#7 – Pastor, Are You Mistaking The Actions Of A Few For The Consensus Of The Majority?

  • When hurt and troubled, the giants seem to be in the majority!
  • No matter how much venom is being spewed at you, take the high road and remember that not everyone is against you!

#8 – Pastor, Are You Looking At The Bigger Picture?

  • The problem you face, when being forced out, is much bigger than you and your family!
  • As hard as it is on family and friends, keep the big picture in mind!
  • There will be another brother to follow you if you do, in fact, leave the church. Please try to avoid a scorched earth policy… for his sake!

#9 – Pastor, Are You Wanting To Leave In The First Place?

  • Are you just looking for an exit ramp!
  • If you are looking for any excuse to leave, then leave and keep your mouth shut!

#10 – Pastor, Are You Willing To Admit Possible Mistakes And Work Things Out?

  • It could be that the whole reason you feel pressure to leave is from a mistake on your part.
  • Regardless of the actions taken by others, try your best to admit your mistakes, bear the consequences and move on WITH the congregation.

Conclusion

Leaving a church voluntarily or by force of opinion/vote, is never easy. In the best of circumstances, when a pastor leaves a congregation, it is difficult to move forward. Often, people are caught in the middle and never recover fully from the unfortunate course of events. Assuredly, if a pastor considers the aforementioned questions, then he possibly can make a better decision about whether or not to leave the church he dearly loves.

When Your Back Is Against The Wall

This sermon outline encourages us to look to the Lord at all times, but especially in the midst of our impotence. Let’s face it, many things are not within our grasp or under our control. May God help all who review this post so they can be reminded of God’s omnipotence!

Title: “When Your Back Is Against The Wall!”

Text: Exodus 14:13-14

(Exodus 14:13-14) “And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”  (KJV)

Introduction:

•    Many times in life we come to realize that there is not one thing you can do to change the situation for the better.
•    The best of parents, the best of doctors, the best of negotiators, and the best of many others cannot change the fact that some things you cannot do or better in your own strength.
•    Moses’ life is full of situations just like this.
•    I want us to see a great truth that Moses had to learn that should encourage us in our prayer life.
•    This great truth of which I am referring to is the truth of Importunity.
•    Moses was completely impotent in the situation at the Red Sea and in many other situations.
•    Sure he could have done certain things but they would have been futile.
•    I want us to see that we have to realize we are utterly helpless in this life apart from God!
•    We must come to Him in faith believing His Divinely Inspired word.
•     Let us examine our text for some tools in our prayer life!

Proposition: There are three things I see in our text verses that reveal importunity which we should adopt into our prayer lives!

I.    Don’t Fear!

A.    Sometimes things happen and we get scared!

B.    Many times we get scared because things are completely out of our control!

C.    A child of God should abandoned fear and seek out faith!

D.    Moses was probably a little scared but he soon recognized that fear would be disastrous

E.    All Moses knew when he called on God was that he had done exactly what God said to do and he was now in a predicament!

F.    We should not fear, but rely upon God!

(Proverbs 3:25) “Be not afraid of sudden fear..”  (KJV)

(Psalms 56:3) “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”  (KJV)

II.    Stand Still!

A.    The hardest thing to do sometimes is to keep your hands out of a situation!

B.    We are not in control of something and we try to fix it, but many times we end up fighting against God.

C.    Through this difficult and precarious position Moses was in God had a grand design and Israel did not comprehend what was going on!

D.    Standing still shows that you are resided in God’s hand and you are going to trust Him to work it out!

(Psalms 46:10) “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”  (KJV)

III.    Look For God!

A.    Sometimes no matter what you think, plan, figure out, you end up seeing that all is vain!

B.    God wants us to see Him all glorious and grand!

C.    If you are in His will then you can rest assured that He will work things out for His glory!

D.    Look at what God id for Israel!

(Exodus 14:15-31) “And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night. And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians. And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.”  (KJV)

Conclusion:

To The Christian:

•    God was proving His provision and proving His servant Moses’ leadership among those of Israel!
•    When your back is against the wall, Don’t fear, Stand still, and look for God to work things in His way and teach you something in the process!
•    Realize that you cannot fix everything the way you want them!
•    God is in control!

To The Sinner:

•    Accept Christ as a repentant sinner!

Pastoral Leadership Gone Wild

Swaggart's confessionImage via Wikipedia

One does not have to look very far to find modern day examples of pastors and other church leaders who have made shipwreck of their ministries and lives. It seems like every month or two that some church leader is exposed for their embezzlement, adulterous affairs, or for their gross error in new doctrinal positions. It is bad enough for those who are close to the situation, but these type of situations wreak havoc throughout all of Christendom.

Samuel’s Boys

Like Eli before him, Samuel had a problem with wayward children. Not just any children, but his “Timothy’s”. These men were to judge Israel when he was gone. In fact, they were already serving in this capacity. These boys are said to have not walked in his (Samuel’s) ways, to have turned aside after lucre, and took bribes which perverted their judgment! This was a leadership recipe headed for disaster!

(1 Samuel 8:1-3) “And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba. And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.”  (KJV)

We are shown, many times in the Scripture, how leadership affects people good and bad. Listed below are four common aftershocks of Pastoral Leadership Gone Wild!

  1. When Pastoral Leadership Fails, It Gives The Opportunity To Make Things Worse – Usually starts with the infamous, “Well, if he/she did that and they are “*#&^” then I don’t see why I cannot do the same!”
  2. When Pastoral Leadership Fails, It Gives Occasion For People To Overreact And Move To The Extreme – A strong willed pastors leaves, quits, etc. then usually the people opt for someone to the opposite extreme! Seen this happen time and time again!
  3. When Pastoral Leadership Fails, It Gives Satan An Avenue To Turn People To Wrong Leadership – More times than not, immature Christians will embrace weak/bad leadership when this happens. They are really vulnerable and open to answers about what happened. They usually get the wrongs answers… Satan sees to that!
  4. When Pastoral Leadership Fails, It Usually Keeps The People From Achieving The Same Spiritual Plain Of Leadership They Had Previous – The idea is that, “This time we will do it differently!”… and different it remains!

Conclusion

Samuel’s boys caused more problems than they realized. Not only did they dishonor God and their family name, but gave great occasion for Satan to swerve the masses away from Israel’s Theocracy! Israel went to Samuel and said they wanted a king to rule because he was too old and his boys were not right with God. Never mind they did not want to be right themselves. They just found opportunity to move their agenda forward. They wanted to be like all the other nations!

King David may have been a man after God’s own heart, but he was nothing like the King of all ages Who brought them from Egypt! Oh, how we who lead God’s people must be careful to stay right with God and follow in His footsteps! Otherwise it is Pastoral Leadership Gone Wild!
