Heart To Heart With Pastor Ed Bowen – #1

Pastor Ed Bowen was saved on March 24, 1957 at a revival meeting at Horse Branch Church in Turbeville, S.C. at the age of 23. Brother Bowen has been married to his wife, Margaret, for over 54 years. After being ordained in 1960, Pastor Bowen went on to preach in various places until he became pastor of Cherryvale Baptist. Having been there for over 43 years, in 2000, he had to slow down a bit due to prostate cancer.

Though unable to do what he used to do, Pastor Ed has just changed venues. For over ten years now, he has been encouraging people via email. He has graciously agreed to be a contributing author to this website. This series of posts entitled, “Heart To Heart” are the fruit of his times with our Lord Jesus! If they mean as much to you as they do me, then EMAIL him and let him know about it!

THE LORD SEALS US

(Ephesians 4:30) “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”  (KJV)

“The seal of the Lord impresses His likeness on all it touches. So, the Holy Spirit seals us and makes us strong with the strength of Christ; and wise with the wisdom of Christ; and gracious with the gentleness of Christ; and holy with the purity of Christ.

We have the earnest of the Spirit, that is, the guarantee that our bodies will be resurrected from the dead.

The seal forever identifies us with Christ, as His possession; it guarantees that I am His and He is mine.

The Holy Spirit not only seals us, He is the seal; having His indwelling presence gives us this assurance.

This makes us distinct from the mere natural man who has no assurance of his future destiny. It is a great blessing to know assuredly that we belong to Christ.”

David’s New Beginning

When a Christian sins, what must take place to make things right! This outline helps us see how this played out in King David’s life as well as how it applies to us today!

Title: “David’s New Beginning!”

Text: Psalm 51

Introduction:

•    We have in these verses a record of a psalm that David wrote after Nathan the prophet came a made David deal with his sin!
•    There are steps listed in this psalm, which illustrate how a sinning saint comes back into fellowship with God!
•    All of us have sinned, and no one likes to deal with it, however it is great when one can get clean!
•    These steps are not complicated most of the time we do not consciously do them! Often we do these by leadership of the Holy Spirit!
•    These notes came from Scolfield Reference Bible page # 623

Proposition: There are seven steps a person must take in order to get back in fellowship with God according to the Psalm!

I.    The Sin Must Be Dealt With!

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.” (Psalms 51:1-6 KJV)

A.    We must admit we have sinned against God (verse 4)

B.    We cannot continue as we once had! We have to face God on the matter! He will not shed more light until we deal with the issues at hand!

Proverbs 28:13 ¶ “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

C.    We essentially agree with God on the matter! He doesn’t change His mind on sin! Sin is sin!

D.    The Bible is the best place to come to the agreement!

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” (James 1:22-25 KJV)

II.    Forgiveness And Cleansing Through Blood Of Christ!

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” (Psalms 51:7 KJV)

A.    Hyssop – was a shrub that was used to apply the blood and water in the purification process.

B.    The basis for our cleansing was the precious blood of Christ.

1Peter 1:18-19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”
Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

C.    We do not depend upon an animal’s blood for forgiveness!

D.    Any person can rest upon this great truth!

Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

III.    Cleansing!

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalms 51:7-10 KJV)

A.    Cleansing is what man needs more than anything else!

Leviticus 16:30 “For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.”
Psalm 19:12 “Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.”
Psalm 119:9 ¶ BETH. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.”
Jeremiah 33:8 “And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.”
2 Corinthians 7:1 ¶ “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
Ephesians 5:26 “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”
James 4:8 “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

B.    This is the desire of the repentant sinner and the repentant saint!

C.    What a blessing to know that our sins are taken care of!

D.    Cleansing cannot be bought; it is simply appropriated through Christ!

IV.    Spirit Filled Again!

“Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.” (Psalms 51:11-12 KJV)

A.    David prayed that the Spirit would not be taken from him, however, we do not pray this, for He indwells us!

B.    David was not speaking of being lost and saved again!

C.    When one is not Spirit filled, then they are not happy!

D.    The guilt of our sin is minimal when we are Filled!

Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”

V.    Service Can Be Enjoined Again!

“Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” (Psalms 51:13 KJV)

A.    David argued that once his great sins were forgiven and cleansed, he could again be involved in service of the Great King!

B.    Often when one has been involved in a particular sin, and they have overcome it and have had cleansing, then they can help keep others out of the same trap!

C.    You cannot adequately serve the Lord without being right with the Heavenly Father!

Hebrews 12:1 ¶ “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”

D.    David was quick to tell Nathan what to do for the man in the illustration, but when he dealt with his mistakes then he was able to help many more in a more enlightened way!

VI.    Worship Is Enjoyed!

“Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” (Psalms 51:14-17 KJV)

A.    Renewed worship is a natural byproduct of cleansing!

B.    David was thrilled to have his sin dealt with!

C.    Sin always cuts off true worship!

D.    This was illustrated in the church at Corinth! There was much division and dissention because people stopped worshipping Christ!

VII.    Restored To Fellowship!

“Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.” (Psalms 51:18-19 KJV)

A.    Explain the difference between relationship and fellowship!

B.    David was restored! His thoughts and desires were in line with God’s ways! He wanted Blessing upon Zion!

C.    It is wonderful to be restored again to sweet communion with our Lord!

1 Corinthians 1:9 “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”
2 Corinthians 6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”
Ephesians 5:11 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”
1 John 1:3 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
1 John 1:6 “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:”
1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

D.    It is best to deal swiftly with our sin so we can maintain our fellowship!!!

Conclusion:

To the Sinner:
•    Be saved before it is too late!

To the Christian:
•    Keep a short account!
•    Guard this sweet fellowship with everything you have in you!

Thankfulness For Those Who Criticized You | Coping With Criticism – A Pastor’s Nightmare

Not too long ago, while speaking with the assistant pastor of my home church, it was related to me that when criticized it was important to respond in an appropriate manner. Anyone with a conscience wants to do this, but if we are honest about it, then we will admit that failure is commonplace. Thinking about the statements Brother Frank Shumate made to me included the purposeful, “Thank You!” to the one who criticized you. I will have to admit that I have never thought about it in that sort of way.

In later posts we will address this in more detail, but we need be careful about our initial assumptions of people’s motive and character who look us in the eye and share a criticism. Not everyone comes across the right way, especially if they are upset, or nervous about speaking with you as pastor. It is also very important that we honestly listen to what is being said. This is so hard… isn’t it? It is even harder when you already have an issue with someone!

Learn To Be Thankful

(1 Thessalonians 5:18) “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”  (KJV)

I, for one, have not arrived to a place in life where I get excited about someone critiquing me. Celebrating the bleeding wounds left by an irate church member, or a solemn, grave looking laymen in the church is not on top of my “to-do” list each week. However, I can be thankful for the opportunity, which God has providentially given, to exhibit the fruits of the Holy Ghost.

We can preach sermons impregnated with great instruction, but a sermon is shoes is much more palatable. Handling moments like these is very important to you, them and onlookers. This is an ongoing process that will be mixed with utter failure, but we can LEARN to be thankful for criticism!

Just yesterday I came across a great blog post that spoke to my heart on this aspect of handling criticism. The writer of this piece was relating that when criticized we should be thankfully reminded that we are in the “game”, and not on the sidelines. It is really easy for people to see things from the sidelines. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes they get it wrong, but, at least, we are usually trying to move forward!

3 Ways To Express Thankfulness For Those Who Criticized You

Below are three simple suggestions as to how to effectively be thankful for those who criticize you and show it.

#1 – Express Your Thankfulness Through Your Speech

(Proverbs 15:1) “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”  (KJV)

When you are criticized, do not try to defend yourself. Usually, this make things much worse and you leave the high ground. You become defensive and will, most likely, miss out on any helpful thoughts from the person. A simple, “Thank you for your thoughts!” will do you much good for a couple of reasons. One, it will help you gain the respect of the person who criticized you if they are truly trying to be helpful by their criticism in the first place. And two, it will serve to take the steam out of the person if they are simply trying to start a conflict.

#2 – Express Your Thankfulness Through Your Actions

When speaking with someone who is critical of you in some way, be sure to not make things worse by having a scowl on your face. As hard as it might be, keep a smile on your face. Shake their hand firmly, and maybe throw an arm around their back. Do not treat them inappropriately. Be kind and gracious. You never know… you might gain a true friend!

#3 – Express Your Thankfulness Through Your Prayers

I strongly suggest that you pray with the person before the criticism takes place. (That is, if you know it is coming – a pre-arranged meeting, etc.) When you are done speaking be sure to have a word of prayer as well. This is important! If someone is truly concerned about honoring the Lord Jesus with their reproof, then they will want to cap things of in the spirit of prayer.

Private prayer after the meeting is over when you are alone is important. Bitterness, anger, and contempt will seek a lodging place in your heart if you do not guard yourself. Sincere praise and thankfulness for the criticism is the only sure balm for your soul. Indeed, it is the only way to keep a sweet spirit!

Conclusion…

I am not perfect in this area of criticism. I wish I were, but I feel that these things will help all of us handle criticism much better. Bottom line pastor, be thankful for those who criticize you and your ministry!
