Why Some Pastors Are Out Of The Ministry

Occasionally, I will meet somebody who used to be a pastor, evangelist or missionary. The key phrase is, “USED TO BE”! Recognizing the fact that anybody who serves God can end up OUT of God’s will and ministry, we should take great care not to end up a casualty. We should do our best not to forsake the path and quit on God. After all, Jesus did not quit when carrying His cross!

The following 9 points(*) are from veteran missionary Robert Smith. He has worked in the country of Brazil for over 29 years with Macedonia World Baptist Missions. These thoughts are from a lesson he uses when teaching on the subject, “Why Missionaries Quit”. Whether you are a missionary or not, you can apply Dr. Smith’s thoughts to your situation! I hope this post will not only help missionaries, but many pastors and evangelists!

  1. BURN OUT* – over extending yourself to the point of exhaustion and spiritual emptiness. RPM = Recklessly Pursuing Ministries
  2. BLOW OUT* – one major incident or experience that causes you to leave the field. Ex. robbery, death, assault, terrorism, etc.
  3. STRESSED OUT* – drained emotionally through pressure points; competing with other missionaries (pastors, evangelists).
  4. FLAME OUT* – out of ideas; out of lessons; out of messages…
  5. SHOCKED OUT* – letting differences affect you: culture shock; missionary shock…
  6. SCARED OUT* – fear accompanied by little or no faith. Don’t be afraid of fear, but there is a problem when you have fear with no faith.
  7. FAKED OUT* – leaving, thinking it was the will of God.
  8. THROWN OUT* – leaving the country by being kicked out by the government.
  9. PULLED OUT* – being brought out of the country at the request of your pastor or by the mission board. (immorality, immodesty, etc.)

Though good, solid and qualified men have started out well, many do not finish well. May each of us who claim God’s calling endeavor to be like the Apostle Paul… “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:”. Please share this post with your preacher friends!

88605: Abide in Christ Abide in Christ

By Andrew Murray / Whitaker House Publishers

Instead of accepting the invitation to enter God’s throne room, many Christians stand alone outside the door, uncertain and ashamed. Christ beckons them to His banqueting table and offers them a room in His house, but they foolishly give up the glory of the life He has offered. They come to Jesus as Redeemer but never go beyond the doorway to abide in Him and experience the unspeakable joy of dwelling with the King of Kings. Andrew Murray knew what it meant to be continually in the Father’s presence. Read these thirty-one heart-searching readings and learn how to live daily in closer communion and fellowship with Him. Accept God’s invitation and live in His blessing and glory instead of shuffling your feet at the gate.

The Importance Of Making Wise Decisions As A Pastor

The gut wrenching feeling you get the moment you make a poor decision is awful. It is almost like falling down a set of stairs! What’s worse is the insurmountable pride that keeps you from rectifying the the situation immediately. I have been there, done that, and have the scars tattooed upon my soul as a result. Wisdom just seems to escape me sometimes!

Every pastor knows that he will have a lot to give account for when he stands before the judgment seat of Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:10) Though mere mortals, pastors have to be extra careful when making decisions. Many times the ones we make have larger consequences than realized initially.

Listed below are 5 questions to ask yourself before making decisions…

#1 – Is what I am about to do what CHRIST would like me to do?

#2 – Is what I am about to do in absolute agreement with the Word of God?

#3 – Is what I am about to do being done with a godly motive?

#4 – Is what I am about to do something I can live with?

#5 – Is what I am about to do something that will build up or edify God’s people?

Conclusion:

While there are many other thought provoking questions you can ask yourself when making decisions, the list above is a good one to start with! Jesus warned about campaigning without counting the cost. (Luke 14:28) May each spiritual leader remember that when we make decisions, they affect more than just us. Every decision is important and must be made with surgical care!

838309: The Preacher and His Preaching The Preacher and His Preaching

By A.P. Gibbs / ECS Ministries

This present books brings Gibb’s encyclopedic knowledge of the subject within our reach. Gibb’s seriousness, thoroughness, energy, and urgency breath from this book. First entitled A Primer on Preaching, as Gibbs matured so his study of the sacred art of preaching grew. His final edition was completed just months before his sudden homecall in an auto accident enroute to Hamilton, Ontario, for a two week series of Gospel meetings.

The Uniqueness Of A Pastor

While many are called by the title of pastor, each one is different and unique. I often describe this issue by comparing it with the far extensive range of fingerprints. Just as individual fingerprints are different and unique so are pastors. Though many pastors may operate in the same manner, preach in the same style, and believe the same thing they are, in fact, different.

Illustration From Nature

When you consider the animal world you learn a lot about uniqueness. The markings on humpback whales are very unique. Researchers have been following them for years and have cataloged many individual whales… even naming them. They can do this because they have identified these whales by their uniqueness.

Closer to home you can see how God provides a habitat for uniqueness. Growing up in a rural community in North Carolina, I am very well acquainted with squirrels. I have noticed that there is a tree for every squirrel. If this is so, then there is a place for every unique preacher.

Illustration From Scripture

Even to the casual observer, you can see that the preachers of the New Testament were very unique. The Apostle Paul was a well educated man and Peter was only a fisherman. Peter was not dumb or stupid. Far from it! He was very intelligent in his trade.

Peter, a fisherman, and Paul, a tent maker, each had their strengths and weaknesses. What’s more, there was room enough for both of them! So many times we stereotype preachers by what region of the country they are from, or by where they went to school. We must remember that when God calls a man, He also equips him for a specific and unique purpose.

Illustration From Current Events

There are several examples of the uniqueness of pastors in modern times. I personally know two well known pastors, a father and son, who are opposites. In fact, they could not be more opposite, in my opinion, than black and white. They worked together for over two decades in spite of their differences. Even in a single Christian home, the uniqueness of pastors can be seen.

We have all been in special meetings where there were multiple scheduled preachers. While viewing the roster of pastors, it is quite amusing, sometimes, to see how they are lined up. One guy’s style is more monotone, while the next speaker might be flamboyant. More than one time I have seen God use this kind of uniqueness to bring revival in the hearts of His dear children.

Conclusion

If I have learned anything in the last several years of ministry, then it is this… we should celebrate our uniqueness rather than degrade and belittle it. Just because a pastor does things a little differently does not necessarily mean that he is wrong and I am right.

It was reported one day that some men were of a different company casting out demons. The disciples wanted to rebuke them and Jesus said to leave them alone (Luke 9:49-50). Maybe we should be a little more concerned about our own unique lives than that of our fellow pastors? At any rate, every pastor is unique and this should be viewed as an asset rather than a liability.
